Gordon later recalled that "as soon as Thurston came up with the name Sonic Youth, a certain sound that was more of what we wanted to do came about." The band played Noise Fest in June 1981 at New York's White Columns gallery, where Lee Ranaldo was playing as a member of Glenn Branca's electric guitar ensemble. The name came from combining the nickname of MC5's Fred "Sonic" Smith with "Youth" from reggae artist Big Youth. Moore and Gordon formed a band, appearing under names like Male Bonding and Red Milk and the Arcadians, before settling on Sonic Youth just before June 1981. After the breakup of the Coachmen, Moore began jamming with Stanton Miranda, whose band, CKM, featured Kim Gordon. ![]() Shortly after guitarist Thurston Moore moved to New York City in early 1977, he formed a group, Room Tone, with his room mates, who would soon change their name to the Coachmen. ![]() History Formation and early history: 1977–1981 1.6 Independent agents and signing to Matador: 2007–2011.1.4 Major label career and alternative icons: 1990–1999.1.1 Formation and early history: 1977–1981.In 2011, Ranaldo announced that the band was "ending for a while" following the separation of Moore and Gordon. In 1999 their music reached a new audience interested in 20th-century classical music and experimental music with the release of " Goodbye, 20th Century", a double album of covers of avant-garde recordings that featured works by avant-garde classical composers such as John Cage, Yoko Ono, Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros, George Maciunas, Cornelius Cardew, Nicolas Slonimsky and Christian Wolff as played by Sonic Youth along with several collaborators from the modern avant-garde music scene, such as Christian Marclay, William Winant, Wharton Tiers, Takehisa Kosugi and others. The band are considered to be a pivotal influence on the alternative rock and indie rock movements. Sonic Youth have been praised for having "redefined what rock guitar could do", using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings and preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments' timbre. The band experienced relative commercial success and critical acclaim throughout their existence, continuing partly into the new millennium, including signing to major label DGC in 1990 and headlining the 1995 Lollapalooza festival. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American undergroundthat focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. ![]() In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. I commend Rise for taking a leap that no other MH game has really gone to. Now is this a bad thing? I.don't think it is. Now Rise does get criticized for the fast paced combat system eliminating the need for strategic gameplay and simplifying the combat down to "dodge the attack with either your evade, the wirebug, or one of your weapons counter moves" (a lot of weapons have counters) detracts from the difficulty of the game, as strategizing your approach and playing proactively against what is fundamentally still an unpredictable opponent is more difficult than reacting in time to pop one of your, frankly, abundant responses out of thin air. In fact, it almost feels like Rise's combat was inspired by the combat of Dantenetta games. ![]() It's geared towards high velocity gameplay and reaction based combat that you often times see in games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, or Nier Automata. Rise's combat is very fast paced and very reactive. While old world MH and Iceborne were known for more deliberate and strategic gameplay patterns, forcing the player to use their knowledge of monster behaviors and their adaptability to change their approach, playing proactively to avoid getting carted, Rise combat can be boiled down into one primary word: fast. Rise is noteworthy for taking something new and implementing it as a way to spice up the combat. Its groundbreaking in the new stuff it brings, but it isn't groundbreaking in the sense that this new stuff is a dramatic shift in what makes Monster Hunter the franchise it is. But why is that? Is the story so captivating and new that we finally have a MH game with consequences based on character decisions? Are the graphics so out of this world that it made my grandmother think there was an actual dragon in her television? And with it managing the sales numbers it has achieved, its no stretch to say that people like the game. While Monster Hunter Rise has had a relatively tumultuous early life, it still is considered a relatively good Monster Hunter game. There's just a couple of things I want to highlight. It deserves to be analyzed and looked over before its massive content dump comes out and more than likely sends the community into a frenzy about what the next meta set is going to be (how much do we wanna bet its gonna be Long Sword and Sticky LBG still?) So I wanted to have an opportunity to get out my feelings on Monster Hunter Rise and how it has impacted my view of Monster Hunter as a franchise and I feel like some of the things I want to say about the game will more than likely get addressed when Sunbreak comes out, as some of the praises/criticisms I have of the game line up rather well with the praises/criticisms other people have (and many of them are far more aggressive than I am about expressing those opinions).īut Monster Hunter Rise, in my opinion, deserves this. ![]() Submissions of this nature will be removed.Īlways follow Reddit's rules and/or Reddiquette Please refrain from posting topics that have been vigorously discussed in the past.ĭo not repost content that already exists on /r/MHRise. Modern quantum physics instead understands electrons as being distributed within orbitals, mathematical descriptions that represent the probability of the electrons' existence in more than one location within a given range at any given time. Early models depicted electrons as particles that orbited the nucleus, much like the way satellites orbit Earth. Knowledge of quantum principles transformed our conceptualization of the atom, which consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons. In fact, the word "quantum" has Latin roots and means "how much." For example, light of a fixed frequency will deliver energy in quanta called "photons." Each photon at this frequency will have the same amount of energy, and this energy can't be broken down into smaller units. Among the basic discoveries was the realization that matter and energy can be thought of as discrete packets, or quanta, that have a minimum value associated with them. The field of quantum physics arose in the late 1800s and early 1900s from a series of experimental observations of atoms that didn't make intuitive sense in the context of classical physics. Quantum science may even reveal how everything in the universe (or in multiple universes) is connected to everything else through higher dimensions that our senses cannot comprehend. Physicists are exploring the potential of quantum science to transform our view of gravity and its connection to space and time. These discoveries are a valuable resource for innovation, giving rise to devices such as lasers and transistors, and enabling real progress on technologies once considered purely speculative, such as quantum computers. Quantum discoveries have been incorporated into our foundational understanding of materials, chemistry, biology, and astronomy. ![]() In fact, quantum science closes gaps in our knowledge of physics to give us a more complete picture of our everyday lives. It depicts a man standing on the of a cliff overlooking a valley filled with fog. Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog falls closely in line with the latter example. If you have ever seen the Grand Canyon in Arizona, then you are likely familiar with the feeling of the sublime. In a journal article by Miguel Angel Gaete, he said, “ The sublime entails powerful conceptual associations such as the infinite and the limitless, together with a series of overwhelming feelings that they can elicit in those who experience it” (59). Sitting on the edge of a cliff or mountain with your legs dangling off the side, realizing that you are inches away from death that is sublime. That feeling of realizing how small you are in the vast universe is sublime. Something may be sublime, but the sublime is more of a feeling one experiences. It makes you realize the power, greatness, and grandeur of the object next to your own smallness and fragility. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the sublime as “ tending to inspire awe usually because of elevated quality (as of beauty, nobility, or grandeur) or transcendent excellence.” I would add that something that is sublime borders on the edge of fear, or even death, but not quite reach those points of dread or injury. Its perfectly captures the feeling of the sublime which was a prominent theme during the romantic period. ‘Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog’ is currently located in Kunsthalle, Hamburg.Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog was painted in 1818 by German artist Caspar David Friedrich. “Stripped to an essence, Friedrich's paintings are hypnotic and memorable, evoking powerful longing, as though deep memories, dreams, and yearnings have been revived and ache to be fulfilled.”. Later in his career, he combined this passionate interest with his belief in self-expression to create unique paintings that displayed breathtaking scenery and possessed an ambience of repose and serenity, the likes of which can be found in ‘Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog’.ĭavid d’Angers once said of Caspar David Friedrich, “Here is a man who has discovered the tragedy of landscape.” Many artists from the Romantic era, including Friedrich, believed that in order to achieve pure self-expression, spiritual and emotionally-expressive heights in their work, they had to step away from the business side of the art world, leaving the money-making and political aspects aside.įreidrich was fascinated with nature and solitude. Caspar David Freidrich was a master in his ability to transform a landscape into a personal and spiritual chronicle, a difficult task for many painters. The painting entices the viewer to peak over the edge of the cliff in order to see what lies hidden. Its slight glowing hue implies that the day is either just beginning, or about to end. The sky uses a significant portion of the canvas. A heavy fog or mist lingers heavily before him, revealing the closer mountain peaks.
